As computational technologies migrate into everyday lives, new frames of references are needed in order to understand and design human-computer interaction. In response to this, aesthetics is beginning to play a role within HCI, and can potentially help renew the field at a time, where experience design and user experience becomes increasingly important. But many questions remain unanswered. E.g. are we moving towards a new unified theory of interaction or is this a complementary paradigm? How can we bridge the gap between traditional performance-based HCI and the new world of HCI where other, harder to quantify factors like aesthetics are more important? How can we design for aesthetics of interaction and how can we evaluate it, qualitatively and quantitatively?

Several different approaches to the aesthetics of computing have been proposed but the area is rather vague with respect to foundations. There is need for a discussion about basic notions and the theoretical and practical implications of various approaches.

It is also of fundamental importance to discuss in what ways aesthetics of interaction design relates to design aesthetics in general as it has been developed within industrial design. What is aesthetics of interaction really all about with respect to interaction, form, expression, experience, performance etc?

The aim of this Special Issue is to present high quality, original, manuscripts related to aesthetics of human-computer interaction. All manuscripts must be related to human-computer interaction, and not to general issues of aesthetics. Manuscripts must be original, but significant expansions and revisions of papers recently presented at conferences will be considered. Possible topics include:

Deadline: The final manuscript is due March 1, 2007, but early submissions are encouraged.

All contributions will be rigorously peer reviewed to the usual exacting standards of TOCHI. Further information, including TOCHI submission procedures and advice on formatting and preparing your manuscript, can be found at: http://www.acm.org/tochi/

Manuscripts are actually submitted via the ACM online manuscript system at: http://acm.manuscriptcentral.com/tochi/
