ACM TOCHI requires that papers be submitted in the Postscript format. (PDF format is also acceptable.) Since some authors are unfamiliar with the process of creating Postscript files, we detail the necessary steps for various platforms below. If we do not cover your platform and you require help, please send the Information Director a message with the details of your situation.
If you do not have a Postscript printer driver installed, read the next section. Otherwise, skip down to the following section for instructions on creating a Postscript file.
Installing a Postscript printer driver
In order to generate a Postscript file from within Windows'95, you must have a Postscript printer driver installed. In order to install a printer driver, select the Add a Printer... option from the Printers control panel. Note: you do not have to have a Postscript printer connected to your machine in order to install a Postscript printer driver.
During installation, the program will ask you for the port of the Postscript printer. At this stage, if you actually have a Postscript printer available, you may enter the appropriate setting. However, an alternative option is to select File. This will configure the printer driver to create Postscript files.
Creating a Postscript fileTo actually print a Postscript file, select Print... from within an application. A dialog, similar to the one below, will appear:

Be sure to check the Print to File checkbox, and then click Ok. A second dialog box will appear asking you to name the destination file. Once named, the printer driver will create the Postscript file.
NOTE: The Postscript file will most likely be created with an extension of .prn and will be referred to as a Printer File. This file's format is indeed Postscript despite not being referred as such by Win95 and WinNT.
Note: the following instructions assume the use of the new printing architecture found in MacOS 7.6.1 and later. If you are using a previous version of the MacOS, the instructions are similar but the dialogs are slightly different. If you have problems, send mail to the Information Director.
To create a Postscript file from within the MacOS, a Postscript printer must be selected in the Chooser:

To print a Postscript file, select Print... from within an application. A dialog, similar to the one below, will appear:

From the Destination popup menu, select File as shown above.
To avoid problems with Fonts, select the following options from the Save as File pane, shown below. Specifically, select Postscript Level 1, ASCII Data Format, and include all fonts except the standard 13 postscript fonts (e.g. Times, Helvetica, Palatino, etc.).

When you are ready, select Save. A Save File dialog box, shown below, will appear. Name the file and select its location, then click on Save.

The Postscript file will then be created.
